Aaron Kuru shows us how it’s done

2016/17 Jumps Jockey of the Year shows us how it’s done with this incredible display of riding skill at the Awapuni Races on 16th June.

Aaron takes the saying “If you fall off, you need to get straight back on…” to new heights after being dumped from Des De Jeu after the gelding blundered after clearing an early jump in the Maiden Steeplechase at Awapuni on Saturday.

The horse fell flat on his stomach and Kuru was tipped out of the saddle but incredibly, he managed to hold onto the reins and jump back onto the gelding before he regained his footing – then went on to run down the TAB favourite Gagarin to win the 3200m race.

I can’t explain it, it just happened and I got back on, the horse has got a lot of ability. said Aaron

Des De Jeu’s trainer, Mark Oulaghan, said he didn’t think the horse had any chance after the mishap after the first fence.

We thought he wasn’t a bad sort of an animal but after the first fence I wasn’t giving him too much of a chance,” said Mark, who was astounded by the victory.
